Water and Light: diptych

Water and Light: diptych

This is a gorgeous traditional egg tempera study of light patterns and shadow changes I see while swimming. Egg tempera is a difficult medium to master, but it has a beautiful clarity of color and velvet surface reflectance I am looking for to describe water. The painting has a strong directional read left to right that is dynamic, not static, making the work always intriguing to read again. The direct style of egg tempera painting absorbs and bounces and reflects ambient light beautifully, akin to water. The work is painted on two solid maple cradled panels; the diptych (two leaf) style is traditional to church altarpieces and many Asian style works to reflect a dynamic movement between to elements. I love this painting. Painted with carefully selected solid lightfast pigments with specific reflecting and absorbing light range the mimiced experience of water is direct and tangible.
